It is not beyond belief to lay claim that cycling conforms to all the preconditions of a ideal exercise to a degree matched by nothing else. The prime advantage is that it is conducted out-of-doors satisfying the main objective of exercise that is to secure and lay up a store of oxygen, which can only be fully achieved in the open air. It also avoids the monotony of indoor exercise giving a frequent change of scene with new rides, which bring fresh sights and varied routes, resulting in a complete change from everyday occupations.

Cycling doesn't develop any one set of muscles excessively. As in other exercises of speed, the chest is strengthened and enlarged; the arms and fingers become firmer in action; and every function of the various organs receive invigorating encouragement.

It only requires a short ride to boost the circulation into healthy activity, to relax strained nerves, refresh tired muscles, and clear the brain. It is almost impossible to be so exhausted, physically or mentally, that half an hour on a bike will not refresh the system like food and sleep combined, and provide it with a far better and more lasting sensation than any stimulant can produce. A brisk ride of an hour, or half an hour, daily, provides a feeling of physical satisfaction. The nerves are relaxed, the muscles rested and the circulation stimulated.

A feature of cycling, different to other forms of exercise is that it is suited to people of differing physical condition and age. In other words, the exercise can be made gentle, moderate, or strenuous to suit and can be regulated at will. Gentle exercise on a bike produces better and more lasting results than any other gentle exercise. In this respect it is simply an exceptional exercise for children; it seems suited to their needs and provides them with precisely what they require to build up their health and strength.

When moderate exercise is required, it can be accomplished by taking a longer ride or at a faster pace, or the two combined; and just lengthening the ride and increasing the speed can achieve strenuous exercise. Simple changes like these means cycling can be adapted to all needs.

Health experts are beginning to recognize cycling as a leading form of exercise, and with the present debate about children's health it is an exercise that fulfills a lot of requirements.

However, it is important to select the correct bike to fulfill the requirements and provide fun for the child.
